a painting in progress -- a diptych of two young girls

These small canvases are a way for me to play with color and layout before starting the larger works. The canvases are rectangular, I just have them in a rocking chair before the fire, to help them dry. The eventual paintings will be 20x24" and will hang a few inches apart from each other.

I like to do these individual scenes that create a larger scene when hung together. It's a good way to handle painting different family members who may want their own part of the painting in the future, or who live in different areas. And there's a tension between the two canvases that I like more than when everyone is sharing the same space. It depends on the scene, though, when it comes to deciding one canvas, two, or more.
